Das M40-03 entstand nach einem Design des verstorbenen Messermachers Kit Carson, der auch für seine Messerserien M16 und M21 bekannt ist. CRKT verbindet mit dem neu entwickelten Deadbolt Lock klassisches Design und moderne Innovation. Beim Deadbolt übernehmen massive Stahlbolzen die Arretierung und verhindern so ein ungewolltes Einklappen der Klinge. Zum Entriegeln der Klinge in Spearpoint-Form dient ein Druckknopf in der dekorativen Achsschraube. Die Klinge besteht aus 4116 Stahl und hat eine Länge von 8,8 cm. Geöffnet wird sie ganz leichtgängig durch die IKBS-Kugellagerung. Als Öffnungshilfe dienen der Flipper oder der Daumenpin. Griffbacken aus Aluminium sowie strukturiertes und leichtes FRN als Griffmaterial komplettieren das Design. Mit umsetzbarem Clip.
