The Mercator multifunction knife was developed and produced by the knife manufacturer Kaufmann & Söhne in Solingen. According to old drawings in the archives, which had almost disintegrated, Otter from Solingen has revived this knife. By hand, 120 steps are necessary to bring the pocket knife to life. The 9 cm long blade is made of cutting, non-stainless C75 carbon steel and is then plistered. This steel is extremely sharp and incisive and is preferred by many knife enthusiasts, even for fixed knives. The awl and can opener are forged on belt drop hammers, pre-ground and then fine ground. The corkscrew has a soul incorporated into the helix to prevent "crumbling" of the cork. The distinctive steel box style handle is made of burnished steel. While it does not have the rust resistance of modern coatings, it does give the knife a high quality appearance. At the end of the handle is a large safety lanyard loop. On the back of the handle is the original D.R.G.M (Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchsmuster) embossing. These features and the uniqueness with which Otter makes this knife are rarely found in modern pocket knives.
