The rustic Windmühlenmesser R. Herder IBEX 100 Carbon Smoked Oak is a compact and elegant outdoor pocket knife that combines traditional Solingen craftsmanship with modern functionality in a stylish, timeless design. Inspired by the classic shape of the Okapi knife, which is made in Solingen and appreciated worldwide, this knife is an innovative further development that has been specially designed for demanding outdoor use. It impresses with outstanding cutting properties and a robust design that remains reliable even under adverse conditions.
The blade of the classic pocket knife is made of high-quality carbon steel, a material known for its exceptional sharpness and edge retention. The carbon steel enables a blade hardness of around 60 HRC, which ensures impressive sharpness and excellent cutting performance. However, unlike stainless steel, carbon steel requires a little more care to prevent corrosion, but the superior sharpness and ease of resharpening make up for this for many knife enthusiasts. The blade measures approx. 10 cm in length and has a back thickness of 2.5 mm. Thanks to the crowned grind geometry, it offers a stable cutting edge that is ideal for fine, precise cuts as well as rough work. The straight back of the blade, which only drops slightly near the tip, gives the blade additional stability, while the slim tip is ideal for detailed cutting work. This blade geometry is reminiscent of the traditional sheepfoot blade and makes the IBEX 100 Carbon a versatile tool for outdoor use.
Another outstanding feature of this knife is the ratchet lock, a modern and secure development of the traditional tang lock. This mechanism ensures reliable locking of the blade, which can be opened effortlessly with two hands via the nail nick. As soon as the blade engages in the back spring, it remains firmly fixed and is ready for use. To close the knife, the spring is released via a ring on the handle, allowing the blade to fold in safely and in a controlled manner. This secure locking mechanism complies with the requirements of the German Weapons Act and ensures easy and safe handling.
The handle of the Windmühlen knife is made of fine smoked oak, whose deep dark color, which ranges from dark brown to almost black, makes the knife a visual highlight. The wood is carefully crafted and oiled, which not only gives it a luxurious look, but also a pleasant feel. The clear, striking lines of the handle harmonize perfectly with the robust design of the knife and make this variant a tool that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
With a total length of approx. 24 cm, the Windmühlenmesser R. Herder IBEX 100 Carbon Smoked Oak is a stylish and practical companion for all those who value the highest quality and classic design. It combines the proven Solingen knife craftsmanship with the advantages of carbon steel and a sophisticated locking mechanism that guarantees safety and user-friendliness. Whether for use in the great outdoors or as an elegant everyday knife, this pocket knife impresses with its outstanding cutting performance and elegant appearance.

For over 150 years, the name Robert Herder has stood for excellent knife quality “Made in Solingen.” Founded in 1872 by Robert Herder at Keusenhof, the company developed from a traditional family of blacksmiths whose roots date back to the 18th century. From the very beginning, Robert Herder focused on quality rather than quantity – with handmade kitchen knives, scissors, and cutlery that were soon appreciated far beyond the borders of Solingen.
Even in the fourth and fifth generations, the company remained true to the principles of craftsmanship and the highest quality materials. Under the leadership of Giselheid Herder-Scholz and Frank Daniel Herder, the company mastered the challenges of globalization and structural change. The philosophy: only a knife made by hand can be truly sharp – and stay that way. That is why Robert Herder revived long-forgotten apprenticeship trades such as grinder and cutter, thereby securing the future of traditional Solingen craftsmanship.
With iconic series such as the K series, Parmoulin, and Grandmoulin, numerous design awards, and a global distribution network in 24 countries, the family-owned company proves that tradition and innovation are not mutually exclusive.
The credo remains the same:
“Good knives are made by hand.”
And you can feel it – with every cut.
